Vietnamese is a tonal language by over seventy million people, mainly in Vietnam, also spelt Viet Nam. Christianity was introduced into Vietnam by Catholic missionaries in the sixteenth century. Vietnamese language is written in an adapted form of the Latin alphabet, created by Jesuits for the first Vietnamese Bible (Kinh Thanh) in 1651. Vietnam has six religions recognised by the State: Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, and the local religions of Cao Dai, and Hoa Hao. Bible work is done by the Vietnamese Bible Society. Bible translations include the Cadman Vietnamese Translation (VT) produced in 1926 and republished in 1995. A contemporary language version was produced in 1998.
